The average duration of the surgery is 2-3 hours. This duration covers the surgery and preparation for it (anaesthesiologist’s service, patient's preparation, anaesthesia etc.).

In case of timely diagnosis of this condition, the surgery is recommended 6-8 weeks after the injury. This period is required to reduce the acute swelling and inflammatory processes, to firm up the muscles; which facilitates faster recovery after surgery. The truth is that after the assessment of concomitant injuries such as traumas of menisci or other knee ligaments the recommended surgery date can be advanced or delayed.

If the patient is of advanced age or less physically active or a partial tear of the cruciate ligament is diagnosed as a result of the trauma, the problem can be solved applying the individually adjusted course of physical therapy.

As with other surgical procedures a reconstruction of knee cruciate ligaments is associated with small risk of complications: main of them are arthroscopy-related tissue damage, infection, and chronic pain after the surgery, numbness of the affected area and stiffness.

If the surgery site is attended carefully the remaining scars are usually very small and negligible. Eventually they fade away and are practically invisible.

It is recommended after the procedure to abstain from active physical activities for some time: walking without the medical aids is allowed after 2-4 weeks, however, only for the short periods of time. More active movement are allowed after 10-12 weeks: fast walking, light jogging or more complicated exercises under the supervision of a kinesitherapist. Complete restoration of physical activity and participation in sports is allowed after the complete recovery and restoration of the muscle strength.

The reconstruction of knee cruciate ligaments is carried out under the regional anaesthesia; thus, you will not experience any pain. During the first days after the surgery, you can experience pain of different severity. If you experience severe discomfort it is recommended to take pain killers prescribed by your doctor.

The average recovery time is 6 to 12 months. During this period the patient gradually reaches his/her previous level of physical activity.

Usually, the patient is discharged on the next day after the surgery.
